West Ham 1-2 Everton
By: Martin | November 9th, 2009
Three points should have been the prize against Everton, but we ended up with none. Everton were in a bit of a slump, not winning since September and having poor form in Europe. The Hammers should have been expected to make sure the Toffees didn’t come away with any points, but it was not to be.
The first half was nothing to be proud of for either team, lots of kick and chase, but new boy Guillermo Franco came close after a cross by Julien Faubert. It was Scott Parker who seems to be the golden boy as he controlled things from the midfield as well as getting a shot on target. But it was obvious from the get-go that the Hammers sorely missed leading goalscorer, Carlton Cole.
It was Everton that got the first break in this pretty dismal game after 26 minutes when the Toffee’s leading goalscorer, Saha, fired his shot from outside the penalty area past Rob Green. The rest of the first half saw the Hammers press the Everton goal but efforts by Manuel Da Costa and others didn’t find the mark.
The beginning of the second half didn’t seem to inspire much from the teams. Junior Stanislas came on for Jack Collison and after ten minutes Alessandro Diamanti came on for Luis Jimenez. But it was Everton that got the best of the luck and after 63 minutes. Substitute Yakubu, on for the injured Saha, shot at goal which Rob Green saved well but Gosling poked in the rebound.
Like the game against Arsenal, the Hammers were two down, but this time it only took 85 seconds to pull one back. Future superstar Alessandro Diamanti put through Junior Stanislas who chipped Everton goalie Tim Howard. The shot was easily covered by Tony Hibbert, so he thought, but Hibbert sliced the ball with uncanny inaccuracy into the back of his own net. Finally the luck was going the Hammers way.
After the own goal it was West Ham all the way, Hines had a couple of excellent chances as did Diamanti, Parker and Franco, but the Hammers were unable to repeat their comeback and lost the chance of clearing the relegation zone.

I guess it had to come sooner or later for Everton in their case it was the latter. Wasn’t it September last time they won a league game. We know they have numerous players injured at the moment and then the sloppy play by Tony Hibbert to give West Ham a goal could really have meant a different outcome today. Both teams weren’t that great if I’m honest and West Ham had their chances to turn it around with Zavon but the absence of the injured Cole definitely showed. Half way through the second half I think the tempo changed for both sides thankfully and if anything Everton’s second goal altered the mood of the hammers and they were unlucky to get a equalizer, even more so with the visitors messy defending at times. Everton must be buzzin with the away result and good on ‘em.
