West Ham 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
By: Martin | August 23rd, 2009Oh the disappointment. After starting the season with an away win at Wolves, the Hammers fell short on Sunday to an in-form Spurs.
The first half was a battle that produced a number of chances, but both defenses seemed up to the challenge. Scott Parker led the charge for the Hammers and Wilson Palacios for Spurs as the midfield battle raged for the first 45 minutes. Carlton Cole seemed to be carrying on where he left last weekend with a number of shots that could have led to an opening goal. At the other end a number of efforts from Luka Modric could have seen Spurs take the lead.
After the break, it only took three minutes for Carlton Cole to show why he has become a staple in the England side. A pass from new boy Luis Jimenez saw Carlton turn and take a strike from outside the penalty area into the top right corner of the goal. It looked like it was going to be a glorious day.
Of course, Carlton became the villain only five minutes later with a terrible backpass directly to West Ham oldboy Jermain Defoe who easily made it all square.
After the equalizer the game opened up with shots by Jack Collison and Mark Noble testing back up goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini. Jimenez came close but Cudicini managed to push it away and stop a certain second for the Hammers.
With fifteen minutes to go, Hammers’ Radoslav Kovac came on for Luis Jimenez, while the unnaturally tall Peter Crouch replaced Robbie Keane for Spurs.
In the 78th minute disaster struck as Spurs’ Aaron Lennon got past Jonathan Spector and angled his shot just inside the far corner past Rob Green. After that the Hammers’ looked for an equalizer with shots from Junior Stanislas, Kovac, Cole and Collison, but to no avail. After five minutes of added time, the goal never came and Spurs left with all three points.
