West Ham in Canada/West Ham au Canada

By: AlexG | July 24th, 2008

The last of our glorified preseason friendlies, this match will be a good test, mostly in the field of fitness. While this game seems of little relevance to us, the MLS All-Stars are in mid-season form and will be looking for a victory against us, and I would like to see the Hammers defend and spread our club’s name. Whether victorious or not, I wouldn’t read too much into the actual result, as I’d much rather see our first teamers last at least 75 minutes.

In a perfect world, there are several things that will happen tomorrow. Most importantly, I cannot bear to see a serious injury before the matches even count. Secondly, tied in with injury is the overall level of fitness. Kieron Dyer especially needs to impress as Curbishley, as per the club’s official website, plans to give him a prominent role this season. I’d also like to see some chemistry between Craig Bellamy and Deano. Last season’s one forward tactic, as many of you will remember, was about as effective as a Parisian smoking ban. ‘Neglected’ Robert Green should also look to impress, though it’s not as though the Hammer of the Year has much competition between the sticks.

Finally, I really hope that there aren’t any further brawls at the match. Green Street has given our club a bad name, andI thought that chapter of our club history had come to a close. I’d hope that no one would hope to emulate this masterpiece of rubbish hoolie porn, though I have faith in my countrymen to only brawl over hockey.

If there are any true claret and blue supporters who are in Toronto, going to the game or not, I’d appreciate hearing from you.

Prediction: West Ham 3-2 MLS All-Stars

For now, don’t think of injuries, just the winnings. Don’t think of the play, just for the goals.

Is ‘Green Street’ new to you or something? This is the 2nd post you’ve mentioned the film. I figured we were all over that by now, whether we liked it or hated it. Did you know the Crew lot are mugs who think themselves hooligans? Did you know Toronto fans have been making threats against West Ham fans since this match was announced? What do you expect, Hammers to roll over and take it without protest? At any rate, this blog was better when it wasn’t active. Good luck with it, but I’m wandering back to KUMB where they’ve got their big boy pants on.

Your stereotype of certain MLS fans aside, I prefer to believe that our supporters are sporting enough to rise above such threats and to shed a negative image, at least those who take the club seriously. And I know it must seem shocking to you that I wouldn’t want to see violence at a footy match, but we are Hammers, and we support an up and coming club and should thus reflect well on the club.
